Cohen the Violinist, 2014

And now the moment you've been waiting for...Cohen the Violinist's Celebration of her accomplishments, 2014 edition!
We didn't do any special projects this year.

Everyone should visit her at her various performance venues. There's always her appearance at the Oceanside Sunset Market on the first Thursday of the month.

Cohen the Violinist, 2013

Once again, it is Labor Day Weekend! This is the time of the year that Ms. Magic Meryle Cohen, Cohen the Violinist, publishes her annual celebration in the U-T San Diego. Below is this year's edition.

But, before you read her story (and you might have already seen it in the newspaper and you just want to know more about her), you first need to watch a little video I made of her as an entry in an Oceanside International Film Festival contest.

The OIFF had a little contest to celebrate Oceanside's 125th Anniversary. They wanted people to submit short videos that were about or recorded in Oceanside. To enter, a person just had to send a message to their Facebook account with a link to the video. If they thought it was OK, they posted it to their Facebook page. Voting was done by Likes of the videos' posts.

Magic Meryle called me and a left messages on the machine telling me about the contest. She thought that she'd be a good subject of a video celebrating Oceanside. Of course, she was right! She plays at the Oceanside Sunset Market the first Thursday of each month and the entry deadline was the following Monday. We had little time to plan.

I got to the Sunset Market after work that Thursday and found Magic Meryle. She had a script ready complete with cue cards. We recorded about five takes of the routine. The last take went without a hitch (well, she did have a little trouble getting her violin under her chin because her hat's ear got in the way) so that is what you get to see. She also had some photographs of her with members of New Kids on the Block (while they were still kids), Eddie Murphy and Paul Rodriguez that she wanted in the video.

I raced home and made the video to upload to YouTube. I told the OIFF of it and they added it to their contest.

The attendees of the Film Festival didn't get to see it. The video didn't win the contest. It didn't have much time to get attention and I don't have all that many Facebook friends to stuff the ballot box. All the other entries in the contest did get shown. Half of them didn't even celebrate Oceanside, they were simply shot there. I guess there was one criterion that they didn't mention: that it had to have slick production values. I thought the point was to celebrate Oceanside. Feh!

Magic Meryle is an Oceanside treasure! The Oceanside International Film Festival's attendees deserve a full refund (even though they don't know what they missed)!

Here is Oceanside's Cohen the Violinist.

And now you can read her story. She's got a new picture this year. Why does she look so different?

Magic Meryle plays at the Oceanside Sunset Market on the first Thursday of each month. Try to go see her. And please don't forget her tip box.

And tell her Chuckbert sent you!

Cohen the Violinist, 2012

The 2013 edition is HERE.

It's Labor Day weekend! Ms. Magic Meryle Cohen, Cohen the Violinist, published her annual celebration today. Here's this year's edition of her story (click on it to see it better, you might need to open it in another window if you have a low-resolution monitor).

I didn't make it over to see Magic Meryle this year. When some of my family were visiting, we were hoping to go to the Oceanside Sunset Market where she plays the first Thursday's of each month. (You should visit her yourself when you have the chance!) The problem was that they were going to be leaving early that Friday morning and we had had a rather busy week. They needed a rest so we stayed home to let them relax.

As she mentions in her story, I have uploaded several videos of her to YouTube. For your convenience, here they are.

I visited Magic Meryle at the Sunset Market and recorded a 20 minute performance of hers. Here it is in four segments.

Rosie O'Donnell had a show on OWN for a while. Rosie had a segment where she had a crew visit some of Rosie's fans. Magic Meryle was the first such fan segment shown on her show. I got an email from Magic Meryle telling me of her appearance but she didn't know when it would air. I managed to record her episode and get her a DVD of it. Here's her appearance on Rosie's show.

As I said, if you're ever in Oceanside on the first Thursday evening of the month you should stop by the Oceanside Sunset Market when Magic Meryle performs. She might not be there right at the start of the market. Give her time to show up. You'll be glad you did!

Copyright Magic

Today we're protesting the House's proposed Stop Online Piracy Act and the Senate's PROTECT IP Act.

Who among us hasn't posted some material that we don't own the copyright of?

I've been living in fear of the lawyers because of one of my YouTube videos.

I uploaded the Magic Meryle segment of the Rosie O'Donnell show to YouTube. I worried that I'd be hearing from Oprah's lawyers about that. I thought about making the Privacy setting of the video so that only people with the link to it could see the video. If I did that it could be seen from my blog but it wouldn't show up in searches of YouTube. Maybe Oprah wouldn't notice it and would leave me alone. But with that setting Magic Meryle wouldn't get the exposure that she deserves.

So I got brave and made it Public so people searching for her would be able to enjoy it. I figured that at worst I'd be asked to remove it.

It appears I didn't need to be worried.

I recently got an email from Meryle. She had no luck watching videos on Rosie's web site. So she sent a message to Oprah's company telling them that the videos weren't working for her at either the Carlsbad or the Oceanside libraries. She also pointed out that they had misspelled her name. She told them that she was looking forward to watching the videos.

She forwarded their reply to me.

They told her that they had corrected the spelling of her name. They said that they had tested the videos on different computers and that they work for them and that the problem might be with her connection.

They then told her that she can watch her episode on YouTube and linked her to the video that I had uploaded!

It looks like I can sleep at night now.

Until SOPA/PIPA passes. Then I'll be off to jail.

Magic Meryle Cohen on the Rosie Show

Remember the exciting news about Ms. Magic Meryle Cohen, Cohen the Violinist, being filmed by the Rosie Show's crew? Be prepared for more excitement!

We set our DVR to record each episode of the Rosie Show so we'd be sure to see Magic Meryle. The show runs each weeknight. I had a bunch of the shows recorded and finally decided that I needed to free up the DVR's disk space. So I started playing the shows. I'd start the playback then hit the fast forward button a couple of times. Each episode would fly by in just about two minutes. I'd go through a couple of weeks of shows each evening.

Last Friday night I was coming to the end of what we had recorded. I was flying through the show recorded the night before and there she was! Magic Meryle Cohen! On coast-to-coast television.

Meryle had sent me a note before Labor Day asking if I knew anyone who could record the Oprah channel. She didn't say why she wanted to know but a Google search filled me in. I told her that my friend Ray gets that cable channel and has a DVD recorder. Meryle didn't get a message from Rosie telling her when her segment was going to be shown. Neither did I. So I hadn't known to ask Ray to record that episode. I thought that we were going to have to get our DVR and Ray's DVD recorder together.

I sent Meryle a note saying that I had recorded her episode and I would need to arrange to get it recorded when I could get our DVR over to Ray's DVD recorder.

Then it occurred to me that the Rosie Show was probably repeated. Sure enough, the Thursday episode was reaired three or four times on Friday. But that was too late. Well, lordy, it was aired one last time Saturday at noon!

I discovered this too late to make phone calls to see if Ray could record it for me so I sent emails and text messages. Fortunately, Ray was able to set up his DVD recorder to record the Magic Meryle episode before he left town for the afternoon. Thanks, Ray!

I made a couple of copies of the show for Meryle.

This evening Jerry and I took the DVDs over to the Oceanside Sunset Market. Today is the first Thursday of the month, the day that Meryle said she plays there. I had sent an email asking if she would be playing there tonight but I hadn't gotten a reply. We went up and down all the streets of the market, DVDs in hand, looking for her but Magic Meryle was not to be found.

I didn't want to lug the DVDs around so we took them back to the car then went back to look at the booths of the market. Jerry bought something that might show up some Tuesday.

After we had seen everything a couple of times we gave up hope and were about to leave. We decided to make one more loop around the market.

As we passed by one booth Jerry grabbed my sleeve and said "There she is!" She saw me and excitedly introduced me to the vendor she was visiting. She hadn't been playing yet because the tips aren't too good for the first couple of hours of the market.

We learned that the day they filmed her was a really nice day. They filmed several hours of her day. It was edited down to four minutes or so. They thought that some of what was recorded that didn't make it to the show would be posted on the Rosie Show's web site. But, alas, that doesn't seem to have happened.

Magic Meryle was amazed that they would send a crew out to California to film her. Apparently Rosie is going to do this with other of her pen-pals. Oprah must have deep pockets.

We went back to the car to retrieve the DVDs. Magic Meryle was thrilled to get them. She hadn't yet seen her network television debut. I hope she's happy with the result.

Here's the Magic Meryle Cohen segment of the Rosie Show.

I thought the tune she plays at the end was an odd choice. Magic Meryle explained it. Now it makes sense.

Cohen the Violinist, 2011

2013 edition is here.

Here it is again already: Labor Day Weekend. Time to celebrate Ms. Magic Meryle Cohen, Cohen the Violinist! Happy Birthday, Ms. Magic Meryle!

We have something very special to celebrate later this year.

Last week I got an email from meryle cohen with a question. She asked if I know anyone who subscribes to the OWN network. She might need a DVD made on her.

She didn't say what was going to be on that involved her.

I told Jerry about the message from Meryle and her question about Oprah's network. Jerry reminded me that Oprah is based in Chicago and that I had been baffled by having somebody in Chicago repeatedly visiting my blog over the last few months as a result of Google searches like "magic meryle cohen," "cohen the violinist" and "san diego union tribune meryle cohen." What's going on in Chicago that people are interested in Ms. Magic Meryle?, I had wondered.

It all started making sense. I remembered the queries were all coming from the ISP named "Harpo"! Harpo Productions is Oprah Winfrey's production company. ("Harpo" is "Oprah" backwards.)

I replied to Meryle that a friend gets OWN and can record programs to DVD. I asked for details about the program she needs recorded. I haven't heard from her yet.

I went to Google to see if I could figure things out for myself. I didn't have much luck. I didn't find anything about her and Oprah.

Then I did something I rarely have to do. I clicked on the "Next" link to see the second page of results.

There, there was a link to the MainStreet Oceanside blog. They tell us that a new Rosie O'Donnell program on OWN is going to profile Meryle Cohen! Rosie's show starts October 10th.

Since then, that link has been promoted to the first page of results for my query!

Do you suppose my blog used as a fact-checking source by Rosie?

I have no idea yet when the Magic Meryle Cohen episode will air. When I find out I'll be sure to post the information.

As she's done for quite a few years, Ms. Magic Meryle Cohen has given us a story of her accomplishments in the San Diego Union-Tribune (click on the image to read it...she's squeezed in a lot of information):

Once again I get a plug. Thanks!

You can see a performance of hers at the Oceanside Sunset Market in my celebration of Ms. Magic Meryle from last year. She plays at the Sunset Market the first Thursday of each month. You should go see her if you can. She'll entertain and inform you. I guess this month's opportunity has passed.

Happy Birthday, Cohen the Violinist! We'll be watching Rosie. Congratulations!

Cohen the Violinist, Very Special Edition

2013 Edition is here.

Labor Day Weekend is here again. Time to celebrate the accomplishments of Ms. Magic Meryle Cohen, Cohen the Violinist!

We get to read about Cohen the Violinist each Labor Day weekend in the "Celebrations" section of the Sunday San Diego Union-Tribune. For the last two years I've been posting her stories.

These posts are about the only ones where people other than friends and family have posted comments. People from around the country have done Google searches of her name and have found my posts.

I've gotten some emails through my profile's Contact link that have given me pointers to information on the web about Ms. Magic Meryle. I was pointed to a YouTube video that I included in last year's post. Unfortunately, that video has been removed by the user who posted it. :-(

I had thought that these emails were coming from another fan of hers but it turned out they were from Ms. Magic Meryle herself.

Earlier this year I got a note from her alerting me to the program "Night on the Town" on Oceanside Community Television KOCT. Unfortunately, the Oceanside government access channels aren't on Escondido's cable TV...it has Escondido's government channel (imagine!). So I wrote back to say I couldn't watch the program since I don't get that channel. She wrote to let me know that they have it on their web site.

"Night on the Town" is a half hour program that shows various activities that you can do evenings in Oceanside. One activity they showed is Oceanside's weekly Sunset Market. The Sunset Market segment of the show was introduced with a snippet of Cohen the Violinist playing her signature "Theme from 'The Addams Family'."

A few months ago I got a message from Magic Meryle telling me that the YouTube video had been taken down and asked if I could get it back. I wrote to say that it wasn't my video so I couldn't help. But, since she introduced the Sunset Market segment of "Night on the Town," I asked if there was a time she'd be performing there again. I said that maybe I could go over some Thursday evening and record some videos to post to YouTube.

She wrote back to tell me that she's allowed to play the first Thursday of each month. So three days later I packed up my camera and tripod on the first Thursday of August and headed over to Oceanside's Sunset Market.

There she was! After she finished a tune I went up and introduced myself as "Chuckbert." She apparently couldn't hear all I said, it looked like she was adjusting a hearing aid, so I explained that I was the person she had been emailing information to. "You're 'Chuckbert'?!?" she asked excitedly. "I can't believe you came all the way from Escondido!"

She's thrilled that I repeat her story on this blog. She's amazed that there are people out there who have the newspaper clipping on their refrigerators.

I set up the camera and tripod and yelled "Action!" The camera can take 18 minutes of video at a time. She gave us a performance that lasted nearly that long. I've broken it up into four sections. Here they come. Beneath them I've listed the tunes I recognize. There are some that I know I know but the titles just don't come to me. Any help in naming those tunes will be very much appreciated.

But first, let's get the ball rolling with this year's celebration of her accomplishments (click on it to see a a more readable version).

Congratulations, Ms. Magic Meryle Cohen!

2013 Edition is here.

It's Labor Day Weekend. That can mean only one thing: Time to celebrate Ms. Magic Meryle Cohen's accomplishments!

This account of her accomplishments is a complete change from last year's story. It's not even characterized as celebrating her birthday. Happy Birthday, anyway, Magic Meryle!

I got some emails in May through the Contact link in my profile from "meryle cohen" pointing me to some items on the Internet that feature Cohen the Violinist.

One of meryle cohen's tips was to search YouTube for "Cohen the Violinist." To save you the time, here it is:

Ain't she grand?

Another message pointed me to a page of Oceanside Portraits. Click on it to enlarge it. Cohen the Violinist is the one with the violin.

This year's story pointed us to her information in the San Diego Reader. It has a link to subscribe to an RSS feed that lets us know about any of her performances The Reader knows about. I've subscribed! I hope to see her some day.

Some time ago, Izzy had gotten a message from meryle cohen through her profile's contact link. It pointed her to the YouTube video. She posted it on her blog. I left a comment about how I had gotten my messages and had been saving them for today's post. Izzy deleted her post. That's why some of you might have been confused about that message getting deleted. Thanks, Izzy, for letting me continue this story!

I Love Labor Day Weekend

2013 edition is here.

The best thing about Labor Day Weekend isn't that it's a day longer than most. No, it's because of the "Celebrations" section of the Sunday San Diego Union-Tribune. This is where people pay to announce engagements, weddings, anniversaries, new babies, graduations from kindergarten, and the likes.

If you can pay for it, you can celebrate it.

Every year we get to share in the celebration of Ms. Magic Meryle Cohen's birthday! She hasn't aged a day since I first noticed the celebration of her birthday many years ago. The picture and type have gotten smaller (the column is only 3 ½ inches wide this year) but the information is pretty much what I remember.

She sounds like a hoot.

(But for all her accomplishments mentioned in the piece the only thing I can find on the Internet about her is her hint for Heloise.)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MAGIC MERYLE!
